The land burned, but the bees survived.

I’m a novelist, speaker, essayist, and author of the recently released trilogy about ancient Egypt’s last native pharaoh and his quest to wrest Egypt from the Macedonians in 200 BCE. Origins, Blood and Chaos, and Civilization’s End are available on Amazon, and Origins is on Audible.

This past year, my essays have focused on living with eco-disaster after losing my home, my writing studio, pets, livestock, and every possession in the 2020 California wildfires. As we began the arduous process of rebuilding on our land, we discovered that this beautiful piece of the world isn’t ours to own, rather the land, soils, plants, and wildlife are alive and have their own needs, if only we listen. What was going to be a reflexive act to rebuild what we lost has turned into a quest to create an apiary where we get to sleep. A bedroom with the bees, so to speak.

Thus began a quest to return in a way that is not only sustainable, but allows for our money and resources to be poured into the land, not an over-priced structure. I hope this sampling of essays conveys the ups and downs of a girl in love with her land, especially in its moment of greatest need.

I look forward to sharing my work and long to hear from you. Dialogue is the way we heal when tragedy strikes in any form. Life on Earth is beautiful, turbulent, and ever changing.

A Bedroom with the Bees will only contain my essays about the wildfire and establishing an apiary and refuge for wildlife and humans. For more information about my novels, speaking engagements, etc. visit my website www.nicolesallakanderson.com.
